More than seven inches of snow fell across Rowan County Friday night and Saturday, covering the roadways in a layer of snow and ice. Some main roads in the county were partially cleared by late afternoon Saturday, however, other roads remain blanketed in a thick layer of frozen precipitation.
Gov. Beverly Perdue declared a state of emergency Saturday afternoon to help with the snow and ice that had affected almost every county. Overnight, 22 counties declared local states of emergency, and the N.C. Highway Patrol responded to more than 1,000 collision calls across the state.
Rowan County Emergency Services Director Frank Thomason said Rowan's emergency management team would be working with local government entities Monday to determine the need for a local declaration.
The N.C. Highway Patrol division that covers Rowan and nine other counties responded to 154 wrecks Friday.
One of those wrecks proved fatal for a motorist off U.S. 601 on Friday night.
The accident happened on Skyview Circle near Potneck Road on Friday night. Rowan County Rescue Squad members transported the victim to the medical examiner at Rowan Regional Medical Center. The trooper investigating the accident was off duty Saturday, and additional information was unavailable.
"I like to throw snowballs in daddy's face," she said.
Roxana Henriquez, 8, and her brother, Carlitos, 3, ventured to the Salisbury City Park Saturday, sledding with their family.
"My favorite thing about the snow is sledding," Roxana said. "It's so much fun."
Zach Johnson and his two older brothers decided to sled down a very steep hill in the Forest Hills neighborhood off of Grove Street.
As if the hill wasn't scary enough, the boys added a snow ramp, which they flew over as they neared the end of the hill.
Snow continue to fall into Saturday night and blankets all the country, and officials urged everyone to stay off the roads unless it is absolutely necessary.
According to comments left by a few of the Post's online readers, Salisbury saw around 6 inches of snow, western Rowan had nearly 8 inches and southern Rowan was covered by nearly 7 inches.
