Making Crystals, Fun Science to Do With Your Kids

It is always fun to do a project with your kids, especially something that has with a touch of wonder in it.  This is a project my sister-in-law shared with us.

To make icicles, take a pipe cleaner and wrap it around a pencil so it is like a spring.  Pull one end down slightly to form a point and tie the other end to a pencil.  Tie it in the middle of the pencil so it will hang into the glass when the pencil is lying across the opening.

Choose a wide mouth jar, and measure how many cups of water it holds.  Empty it and fill it to the same level with hot water.  Add three Tablespoons of borax per cup of water, stirring them in one Tablespoon at a time.  Stir until dissolved. I didn't like using boiling water because of the chance of one of the children, getting burned so I boiled it then let it cool a little, and then worked very quickly with the Borax.  Carefully lower the pipe cleaner into the jar with the pencil resting on the mouth of the jar and the pipe cleaner freely suspended in the borax solution. Let it sit overnight.

When our hands got very cold, we would run to the room with custom blankets and cover up. After a while, we were very warm.

In the morning, just like magic you should have a beautiful icicle.  These are icicles you can hang in your house and they won't drip water when spring comes.
