"She mentioned that from time to time she would favor us again with other stuff," said pantry director Jim Piechorowski.
He needed to find out who she was. At first, he just wanted to thank the woman for her random act of kindness. The promo blankets were handed out at pantry partner Susannah's Kitchen in one afternoon.
"When I did talk to her on the phone, she told me she does it to help children," he said. The woman still doesn't want to be identified, he said. The custom blankets are ministry for her, something she began with her daughter after her husband passed away.
Last week the woman brought 35 more children's embroidered blankets into the food pantry and told Piechorowski she plans to make special Mother's Day promotional blankets for his volunteers to give to clients who are mothers. All of the blankets will now be distributed directly from St. John's pantry.
So while the woman has adopted the church's food pantry recipients, the church pantry wants to adopt her ministry to help in return. Piechorowski said that the church will act as a collection point for fabric, batting and sheets the woman can use to make her plush blankets.
"She does a real nice job," Piechorowski said. "She's a heck of a seamstress."
The fleece blankets will give needy children something warm. "A lot of these kids don't even have a bed to sleep on," he said.
